You can be any character in the world…as long as you’re white.
- They can never find ethnic actors…until they need maids, slaves, thugs, victims, extras, dropouts, villains. We don’t even get to tell our own cultural stories.
- Yet there will never be a black James Bond.
Umm…Johnny Depp is a Native. He’s Cherokee.
Psst he’s not.
Straight from the horse’s mouth: http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/w0012381.html Not the most scholarly source, I’ll admit.
There are people that have contested that claim before I don’t have the source on me right now and honestly I’ve pulled an all nighter and I’m going to bed but as soon as I wake up I’m getting my source and adding it.
Well, just because people have contested it doesn’t mean their claim has any validity.
While I know this post and author meant well, I believe it’s misguided. By this standard, it seems it’s only okay for an actor to portray a character if said character is from the actor’s same place of origin. That would mean that Mads Mikkelson, a Danish actor, could not play Hannibal Lecter, a Lithuanian; Alan Rickman who is English, could not portray American President Ronald Reagan, Scarlett Johansson (American with Danish ancestry) could not play the Russian Black Widow, Natalia Alianovna Romanova, AKA Natasha Romanoff. If you really want to go in deep, American anime voice actor’s wouldn’t be able to voice their Asian characters. For example, Crispin Freeman who voices Alucard from Hellsing, wouldn’t be able to voice him since the character is Romanian and he’s American.
I apologize if it seems like I’m on a diatribe. I just feel like something needed to be said before more people saw this post. I will be ducking out of the debate before it turns ugly.
No it’s not saying that at all. This has nothing to do with National borders.
It has to do with RACE.
In other words all those pictures up there are various shades of Black, Red, Yellow, and Brown Face.
It’s Racist. It’s unacceptable.
A white person can play a white person.
But as soon as you start taping eyelids back, putting on ridiculous layers of tanner, bronzer, and makeup to immitate an existing natural skin color that doesn’t belong to you in any way shape or form you’re hurting people.
So yeah a Danish guy CAN play a Russian dude as long as they’re both white or as long as they’re both of the appropritae race.
Every single picture up there is a white person that was cast for the role tof a character of color and most of them had their features altered to fit the role when they could havve just gotten an actor of that race to play the role.
Hollywood often won’t do that though because they either made the role so offensive that people of that race largely refuse to take the role, or they just opt for using famous white actors instead which is disgusting, and keeps actors of color that need work from getting any exposure and playing a role that they should actually be playing in.
And voice acting is a whole different ball game because all you’re doing is a voice.
As long as you speak the language that the work is being localized dubbed in and you’re talented then you’re good to go.
Although there probably is ACTUAL REAL racism in Voice Acting I just haven’t really heard any stories about it and since Johnny Young Bosch and Dante Basco are doing so well I haven’t really looked at the other voice actors in the industry but just off the top of my head I can say that plenty of talented people of color probably could be used but the majority of Voice Actors right now is overwhelmingly white.
At least from what I’ve seen of their photos on the websites of conventions I’ve always wanted to go to.
basically you missed the point of the post above which is that a bunch of white people have taped their eyelids and put on makeup and donned blackface for hollywood and those are all semi-recent and recent movies up there so it’s still happening and it’s still hurting a bunch of people not only in the film industry but in the audience who have to see a white person faking their features and playing a character that is often associated with many stereotypes that hurt them.
And I’m not sure if I made it clear but in Benedict Cumberbatche’s and The kids fromm Avatar The Last Airbender’s cases they just took a character that was SUPPOSED to be a person of color with a Person of COlor’s background and name and put a white person in there and claimed that although they had the name and the story’s background that it’s somehow ok to cast a white person adnd take away the representation that was in the original material in favor of haveing a famous actor (Benedict Cumberbatch) or an actor that “they paying audience can better relate to” *cough*bullshit*cough*(Avatar the last airbender) instead of the person of color that that character should have been.
